January is a Liver Cancer and Viral Hepatitis Awareness and Prevention Month that is aimed to educate people about liver diseases and to raise patient awareness about the risks of cancer and hepatitis and its available treatment modalities. Liver cancer affects more than 800,000 people throughout the world each year, about 25,000 men and 11,000 women are diagnosed with liver cancer in the United States and around 76% of those men and 36% of those women die from the disease. This malignant tumor is more prevalent in patients with chronic liver disease, especially in individuals with cirrhosis, fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis or in those with Hepatitis B and C infection.
