Clinical Trials Day 2023
May 20th is Clinical Trials Day. This special day serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions made by researchers, healthcare professionals, and study participants in advancing medical research. Their dedication and commitment to improving healthcare outcomes are commendable. Let us celebrate the progress made through clinical trials and look forward to a future of continued innovation and breakthroughs!
Clinical Trials Day commemorates the date when Dr. James Lind, a naval surgeon, conducted the first controlled trial. Lind designed a comparative trial of the most promising cures for scurvy that commonly plagued sailors in 1747. Twelve affected soldiers were divided into 6 groups, each receiving a different supplement in addition to their regular diet. Cider, sulfuric acid, vinegar, seawater, oranges and lemons, and barley water were tested. Those receiving the citrus fruit saw positive effects and began recovering immediately. This discovery led to the addition of citruses to sailors’ diet.
In 2004, the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) proposed the idea of establishing Clinical Trials Day to recognize the significance of clinical trials in advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care.
